Position Purpose:

The Intern will support DCNR in various projects and tasks, gaining hands-on experience in state park operations. This position is ideal for a motivated individual looking to build professional skills and gain industry knowledge. The intern will work closely with the team, contribute to ongoing projects, and assist with day-to-day operations as needed while gaining experience in park operations, resource management, administration and environmental education.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Intern will work at the Cowans Gap State Park Complex.

Work with park staff to learn how to direct a maintenance program to ensure park grounds, structures, facilities, and equipment are properly maintained. Assist in directing all park recreational and educational activities to ensure optimum use of facilities.

Engage with the visiting public through contacts both in the office and field. Provide outstanding customer service to ensure a memorable visit. Learn how staff participates in law enforcement activities using the Crimes Code, Vehicle Code and Fish and Game laws within State Parks. Make contacts with public to ensure that State Park rules and regulations are upheld.

Work with Region and park staff to learn how to manage a park’s natural resources, which includes the preparation, maintenance and adherence to a park’s resource management plans.

Work with park staff by interpreting and applying statewide park operation rules, regulations, and policies and procedures. Provide ideas in developing, presenting to employees and ensuring implementation of operating policies, standards and guidelines to manage local park operations.

Work with park staff with preparing letters, reports, and correspondence as required. Assists in preparing draft press releases to inform the public and others of park activities, programs, schedules, and special events.

Conduct research on park facilities and compile findings for team review.

Assist in analyzing data and creating reports to support project insights and decision-making.

Handle general administrative duties, such as scheduling meetings, organizing files, and maintaining records.

Assist with document preparation, data entry, and other tasks to support department workflows.

Work collaboratively with team members on cross-functional projects.

Assist with special events and work with volunteers.

Assist Environmental Education staff with recreational and environmental education programs.

Participate in park inspections and swimming beach/pool inspections and are required to complete written reports.

Wear personal protection equipment where required.

Operate a state vehicle from work headquarters to various parks.

May be required to perform other special project work as necessary.
