Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is professional forester position whose primary responsibilities are as the District GIS coordinator and integrating watershed monitoring and management into district level forest planning and implementation to adaptively support the district’s habitat, recreation, and operational goals.

Work Duties Assigned
District GIS Coordinator
Serve as District liaison with the Bureau's Geospatial Section and coordinate District level updates and maintenance of Forest Information Management System data layers.

Assist District managers in collecting, maintaining, and utilizing spatial data to advance local management goals, understanding, efficiency, and capacity.

Maintain District data sharing policies and agreement standards to ensure the security, accuracy, and integrity of District data layers based on Bureau, Department, and Commonwealth policies.
Serve as the district’s computer coordinator and work with IT to make sure all policies and procedures are being met with the Commonwealth’s computers and iPads within the district.
District Watershed Forester
Integrate watershed management and monitoring into long and short term operational planning to achieve ecosystem management goals at the site, landscape, forest, and district level utilizing existing spatial and informational data sets.

Coordinate and manage district watershed and stream monitoring data sets and assess watershed level impacts based on habitat, recreation, and operational activities.

Communication, Outreach, and Education
Work with District EES and forestry staff in utilizing spatial technologies and watershed data in communications and outreach programming

Forest Planning and Resource Management
Serve as the district coordinator on updating compartment and Landscape exams and other district level monitoring and learning projects to ensure efficient and timely updates of District Management Plan and Annual Activity Plan at the District level.

Assist in all levels of state forest resource management activities from compartment exams to timber sale administration as assigned by supervisor.

Assists with forest health and insect and disease activities as directed.

Attend all required and assigned trainings and meetings determined by supervisor.

Law Enforcement and Emergency Response
Maintain all basic wildland firefighter qualifications and serve as part of the district’s wildfire suppression response as a local Forest Fire Warden.
Acquire state forest officer training and participate in district visitor services and enforcement efforts on state forest lands.
Acquire a minimum of Hasty Responder Search and Rescue Training Qualifications and participate in district level Search and Rescue response.

This is a professional spatial technology, data, and information management position that requires decision making skills based on analytical thinking and technical competencies in the fields of geo-spatial data management, analysis, and modeling, watershed, forest, fire, wildlife, and recreational ecology, forest management planning, and human dimensions, communications, and public relations.
2. Decision making authority for this position revolves around creative thinking and problem solving by utilizing existing or collected data and information to advance district level management efficiencies within existing guidelines, policies, and procedures set at the district, Bureau, Department, or Commonwealth level.
3. This position has both administrative and law enforcement decision making responsibility and authority in the areas of Commonwealth leases, contracts, wildfire suppression, and state forest rules and regs.
4. Requires a high degree of collaboration partnership building skills with diverse audiences, skill sets, and interests ranging from researchers and emergency personnel to timber sale contractors and laborers.
5. Respond calmly, intelligently, and constructively to complex, high-stress, and emergency situations.

Experience:

Minimum two-year degree in relevant natural science field with GIS certificate or equivalent demonstration of competency in spatial technology and GIS applications through coursework, research, or job experience.
