Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is a microbiologist position in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. The employee in this position conducts bacterial and viral disease diagnostic tests including molecular tests, bacterial isolation, phenotypic and biochemical characterization for the identification of animal pathogens.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs animal disease diagnostic tests using molecular methods for detecting bacterial and viral pathogens based on genotype determination. Employee isolates and identifies animal pathogens from diagnostic specimens using complex identification methods.

Enters test results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), performs invoicing, verifies billing, finalizes reports and distributes them to clients. Document all testing information appropriately to allow audit trails. Answers any client queries on testing. Provides periodic reports about testing and generates test statistics and test quality control charts.

Prepares and quality control microbiological media and buffers.

Performs serological tests such as ELISA for the detection of antibodies and antigens.

Employee orders laboratory supplies and reagents for the assigned tests as needed.

Is responsible for care, maintenance and troubleshooting of the lab equipment used in microbial disease testing.

Assists with the development and validation of laboratory techniques and procedures. Participates in proficiency testing and Inter-Laboratory Comparison Exercises (ICE). Writes, edits, and critiques Standard Operating Procedures.

Assists in laboratory-wide assignments to back up absences of other employees in the section.

Quality Control and Assurance
Participates in the program of Quality assurance as applied to this laboratory service. The employee is responsible for duties related to the laboratory quality system. The quality system includes all aspects of compliance with requirements of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians for laboratory accreditation

Other Work - Performs all other laboratory work as assigned and required.

In the case of a high consequence disease outbreak, the incumbent can be required to avoid contact with susceptible species at home or venues outside of work duties for a period as determined by best current science and department guidelines.

Decision Making:

Troubleshoots the laboratory assays and develops solutions to problems. Consults manager for problems that are of non-routine occurrence. Supervision is provided by Manager who gives technical instructions. Work is evaluated through observation of the work being performed and through monitoring the results produced. Assumes increasing responsibility for independent work with minimal supervision.

Essential Functions

 6. Lift up to 30 pounds with assistance
 7. Follow lab standard operating protocols including safety procedures and utilize personal protective equipment
 8. Maintains immunization against rabies
 9. Must be able to work different shifts as needed during emergency situations
 10. Maintain professionalism at all times
