Position Purpose:

The Pennsylvania Dept of Health, Bureau of Epidemiology is looking for students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Preference given to graduate students and students in a public health program.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

The student intern interviewer will support the enteric disease team and vectorborne disease team at the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The primary responsibility of this position will be to conduct phone interviews of patients with enteric diseases. These will include interviews done routinely following reports of enteric illness and interviews done as a part of enteric disease outbreak investigations. This role will involve interacting with cases of reportable illnesses by phone, documenting health information and key exposures of interest, and supporting disease surveillance and outbreak response efforts. Time permitting, this position will also interview alpha gal allergy cases resulting in mammalian meat allergies linked to lone star tick bites. Other responsibilities may include assisting with database management, data entry tasks, and participating in weekly team meetings. This position may also offer the opportunity to work on special projects as time and interest permit.

Public Health Emergency Response This position may be assigned to an emergency assignment to support the public health emergency response mission of the Department of Health. Emergency assignments could at times be received with little or no advance notice, and may continue for any period of time – ranging from a few hours to several weeks, depending upon the nature of the circumstance. The emergency assignments may at times be performed under adverse conditions and may require travel to another site other than the employee’s assigned headquarters for periods of time.

Part-time Telework-eligible: Under the current Administration, this position may have the opportunity to work from home (telework). In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
