The Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Viral Hepatitis team is seeking a student intern to support efforts related to the investigation and prevention of perinatal hepatitis. The intern will primarily focus on investigating perinatal hepatitis cases and facilitating linkage to care information for pediatric practices. Infants exposed to hepatitis C at birth face risks of infection, making timely diagnosis and care essential for effective treatment and cure. This role provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in public health, epidemiology, or infectious disease prevention to gain practical experience while supporting the mission of the Pennsylvania Department of Health. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Key Responsibilities: Perinatal Hepatitis Case Investigation: Conduct outreach to pediatric offices to identify infants exposed to hepatitis C at birth. Linkage to Care: Provide pediatric practices with necessary resources and information to ensure that infants receive proper diagnosis and care. Documentation: Record health information and track linkage to care activities within designated databases to maintain accurate records. Surveillance and Prevention Activities: Contribute to viral hepatitis surveillance and prevention initiatives as assigned by the team. Regional Data Collection: Assist in gathering regional linkage to care information and insurance coverage data. Database Management: Support tasks such as database management and data entry. Team Collaboration: Attend weekly team meetings to stay aligned with broader departmental efforts and contribute to discussions. Time permitting, the intern may have the opportunity to work on special projects that align with their interests and the department's objectives. Public Health Emergency Response This position may be assigned to an emergency assignment to support the public health emergency response mission of the Department of Health. Emergency assignments could at times be received with little or no advance notice, and may continue for any period of time – ranging from a few hours to several weeks, depending upon the nature of the circumstance. The emergency assignments may at times be performed under adverse conditions and may require travel to another site other than the employee’s assigned headquarters for periods of time. Part-time Telework-eligible: Under the current Administration, this position may have the opportunity to work from home (telework). In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. Demonstrate awareness of the vulnerable populations the organization serves by identifying, providing, and advocating for resources, services, communication methods, and policies that would help those populations achieve health equity. The internship is planned to last one year with the possibility of extension. |
