Position Purpose:

Game Lands Maintenance Worker 1 performs semi-skilled work and assists with other duties.

Game Lands Maintenance Worker 1 must obtain an active Class A Commercial Driver’s License within one year of employment in this job

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Construction and maintenance of State Game Lands, facilities, infrastructure, habitat and resource areas.

Constructs and maintains or assists with maintaining parking facilities and either public access areas or state & federally owned lands through the use of heavy equipment and related tools. Assist with construction of new roadways, road surfaces, bridges, relief drains & culverts.

Develops and maintains or assists with habitat areas and herbaceous openings in forested areas by operation of heavy equipment and skilled use of chain saws. Performs or assists with various husbandry operations for the up-keep and enhancement of herbaceous openings.

Conducts or assists with border cuts through the use of chain saws and heavy equipment along road & herbaceous openings.

Conducts or assists with prescribed burns with firefighting equipment.

Conducts or assists with herbicide/pesticide storage, transport, mixing and application using various types of equipment in accordance with safety regulations and procedures.

Conducts or assists with equipment maintenance.

Assists with various landowner and other programs.

Post & maintain informational signs on state, federal & municipality properties.

Assist with surveying of new game land tracts, encroachments on existing owned properties.

Maintain existing State Game Lands & public access boundary lines & reestablish old boundary lines.

Read maps that deal with State Game Lands & public access.

Assist with nursery production through the securing of seed.

Construct & maintain metal and wooden gates.

Help develop and maintain hunter access and hiking trails, snowmobile, horse, bike.

Develops and maintains or assist in developing and maintaining snowmobile trails.

Report violations on state game lands to proper authority.

Prune and release fruit and nut trees, shrubs, and vines, for wildlife food enhancement.

Construct, erect and maintain structures for birds and mammals.

Cuts timber stand improvement areas on state game lands.

Assist with development and maintenance of special management areas for species.

Establish wildlife habitat through the maintenance of shrubs and tree seedlings.

Assist wildlife conservation officers by picking up highway-killed deer and bear.

Frequently work in an unsupervised capacity in all weather conditions.

Assist with shoveling snow which includes the operation of snow blowers and other related snow removal equipment.

Frequently use a chain saw to perform skilled fellings, bucking, and limbing work.

Assess environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers and the public.

Attend required trainings and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies and laws.

Maintain a safe working environment and report all problems and unsafe conditions to supervisor.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

3. Operate assigned equipment including hand tools, power tools, vehicles, off-road motorized equip., farm implements.
4. Participate in training.
5. Complete prescribed fire training courses.
6. Assists with prescribed fire planning, implementing and monitoring.
7. Traverse uneven obstacles and terrain in all types of weather.
8. Learn techniques and methodology of designing, planting, and maintaining food plots for wildlife habitat.
9. Maintains valid driver’s license.
10. Lift, carry, move heavy objects up to 80 lbs with or without assistance.
11. Walk, climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand and work for extended periods of time.
12. Perform duties which require exposure to mechanical and electrical parts.
13. Perform duties which may include exposure to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; loud noises; and various types of wildlife.
14. Wear protective gear.

This position is guided by detailed instructions from the Game Lands Maintenance Supervisor and in their absence a lead worker Game Lands Maintenance Worker 2.
