Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 15% Receives training in chemical and biological techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), short tandem repeat (STR) analysis and capillary electrophoresis. Receives training in conducting forensic DNA analysis. Receives training in the use of thermal cyclers, genetic analyzers, automation platforms, the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and other equipment and systems unique to the forensic DNA program. 15% Receives training in the identification of human DNA profiles. Receives training in isolation, extraction and amplification of human DNA from forensic casework. Receives training in comparing known and unknown DNA profiles and statistically interpreting the results as a match, non-match, or inconclusive. 10% Receives training in the scientific DNA analysis of physiological samples collected from known individuals such as convicted offenders. Identifies the genetic profile of extracted DNA through the use of various chemical and biological techniques. 10% Receives training in the various techniques used for the collection, preservation, and handling of evidence and convicted offender samples including the importance of maintaining and documenting evidence chain of custody. 10% Receives training in preparing detailed records of analysis and findings that are compliant with laboratory policies and the laws governing the admissibility of evidence in court. Receives training in courtroom procedures, courtroom demeanor, and delivering testimony, and participates in mock trials. 10% Receives training in conducting performance checks of and maintaining laboratory equipment. Receives training in inspecting reagents and supplies common to the forensic DNA discipline to ensure that they meet quality standards and specifications. 10% Attends and participates in staff meetings, conferences and other training and development activities. Reviews pertinent operational manuals, textbooks, journals, periodicals and other documents. 10%. Complies with policies and procedures outlined in the Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Forensic Services (BFS) Quality Assurance Manual and Safety Manual as well as the BFS DNA program manuals. Follows the laboratory’s quality system and accreditation requirements. Performs work in accordance with ANAB criteria and FBI Quality Assurance Standards that govern forensic DNA analysis. 5% Receives training in laws and standards that apply to DNA analysis such as FBI Quality Assurance standards, CODIS policies, and ANAB accreditation criteria. 5% Performs related tasks, as required, to include those found in Enclosure 3 of the Bureau of Forensic Services Continuity of Government (CoG) plan when the Department's CoG Plan is activated. Responds to the designated alternate or secondary location when directed in response to a catastrophic incident. |
