Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position is responsible for providing residents with professional dental care and treatment services. Residential services are provided at the Eastern Region facilities, specifically North Central Secure Treatment Unit, Southeast Youth Development Center and North East Secure Treatment Unit. This position must maintain a current PA license and provide a range of dental services under the general direction of the Eastern Region Director.

Provides professional dental work in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of adjudicated juvenile offenders. Provide appropriate education to residents around oral hygiene and post treatment care. Provide services in an efficient manner and adhere to latest guidelines and recommendations around dental care and infection control. Works to gain the confidence and cooperation of residents.

Work is performed independently under the direct supervision of the Eastern Region Director. Meetings are held periodically to discuss any issues.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs oral examinations, completes and interprets x-rays, provides dental cleanings and treatments to residents upon admission, routinely and as needed basis. Responsible to check chart and inquire for allergies and precautions.

Provides oral prophylaxis, tissue curettage, root planning with root canals, polishing and fluoride treatments when appropriate. Initiates radiographs when necessary to produce the desired diagnostic information.

Provides professional dental care including restorations, anterior pre-molar root canal, molar root canal, tooth simple extractions, and minor periodontal treatments. Examines teeth, gingiva and mucosa of the oral cavity for infections, diseases and lesions. Treats infections and diseases of the mouth and teeth. Administers local anesthetics and prepares, fits, fillings and bridgework as necessary. Takes impressions as necessary.

Completes individual dental service plans to outline where, when and how work identified by dental examination and radiographs will proceed. Provides guidance to develop oral hygiene programs.

Uses appropriate instruments such as explorer, mirror, periodontal membrane probe as well as temperature tests and appropriate barrier devices.

Performs restorative procedures as needed to maintain the optimum oral condition.

Provides and adjust artificial bridges and crowns.

Performs simple extractions, root canals and fillings.

Assists in maintenance and removal as appropriate of orthodontic devices, including braces and retainers, when consulting with orthodontist while resident placed.

Implements sterilization and infection control procedures in the dental services area.

Maintains dental equipment in an acceptable, clean and organized manner to be accountable for safety and security of all items used.

Implements measures to protect individuals and staff from infection and other infectious contaminants. Ensures sharps and soiled items are handled and disposed of in proper manner.

Ensures proper procedures to protect staff using x-ray equipment and complies with requirements on radiologic equipment.

Ensures consents are received as appropriate for services and referrals provided.

Maintains accurate records on appropriate forms for each resident to ensure documentation.

Writes dental summary reports and attends meetings when appropriate.

Provides consultations to the multi disciplinary team relevant to resident oral care and treatment

Ensure resident schedules are coordinated with local nursing staff and communicated to appropriate staff. Ensure that residents are seen in an efficient manner and any schedule changes are communicated appropriately. Schedules appropriate follow-up visits.

Provides in-service training with particular focus on oral health issues and periodontal diseases as necessary. Provide updates and ensure maintenance of appropriate dental policy/procedure manual as necessary.

Ensures appropriate documentation of assessment, care and treatment on official record in compliance with local policy and state/federal standards and requirements.

Participates in scheduled staff meetings and any related statewide meetings as directed.

Participates in continuing dental education as appropriate.

Reviews and develops dental related protocols and policies. Provides consultation on dental care resident issues.

Coordinates services for referrals to community based oral surgeons and oral care needed in outside community sites and hospitals.

Ensures dental supplies are maintained at the required stock levels and that restocking orders are placed so that stock is not depleted.

Attend and participate in staff meetings, supervisory conferences and staff training programs, including but not limited to Crisis Intervention/Suicide Prevention, Safe Crisis Management (SCM), CPR/First Aid and Cultural Diversity in order to develop and maintain position skills.

Makes independent decision making on the treatment plans designed for the individual by the dentist with minimal supervision. Must comply and implement job tasks within the scope of State practice and current dental practice and procedures. Must ensure scope of work is consistent with the direction of the Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services and appropriate system wide Bureau policy/procedure/protocol. Directs any concerns, sensitive issues or limitations to the Eastern Region Director promptly.
