Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This is a senior deck crew position aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara responsible for the general maintenance of the ship with particular attention to the rigging, spars and sails. This role involves interacting with volunteers and the public, providing interpretive information on the ship, its role in American history and sailing in general. This position will act as the lead worker responsible for other professional crew members and/or trainees assigned to specific repair and maintenance tasks. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Performs general maintenance of the ship. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the ship’s maintenance supplies and tools. Maintains an inventory of all ship’s maintenance supplies and tools. Repairs all aspects of compromised sails and rigging. Ensures that all rigging work is carried out to a high standard as prescribed by the captain and chief mate. Ensures that all aloft work is conducted safely. Creates and maintains a schedule of preventative maintenance including but not limited to tarring the standing rigging, slushing masts, treating leather components, ensuring all blocks are in working order, renewing marine coatings, etc. Inspects and reports on the seaworthiness of the ship. Sends masts up and down in a supervisory role. Crosses yards in a supervisory role. Bends sail in a supervisory role. Writes reports and maintains logs and manuals. Trains professional and volunteer crew members and sail trainees. Responsible for being familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; for immediately reporting all workplace injuries or incidents to his supervisor; and for immediately correcting any safety hazards in the work area or reporting same to supervisor. Enforces all safety rules, procedures, and work practices and takes action to correct unsafe conditions in the workplace. Adheres to PHMC’s Core Values and supports and advances the diversity, equity, inclusion, and access goals of the agency. Performs other duties as assigned. |
