Position Purpose:

Assist the Chief Forest Fire Warden to carry out mandated duties as stated in 71 P.S.§
1340.302 (d) and the wildland fire program mission; to provide technical assistance, outreach, and education to communities, forest landowners, and the citizens on regional basis for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant program and other factors involved in the mitigation of effects of wildfires.

Description of Duties:

This position is responsible for implementing statewide goals and processes for the national Community Wildfire Defense Program (CWDG), a grant program intended to help at-risk communities plan for and reduce wildfire risk. The employee is responsible for outreach, education and providing technical assistance for the CWDG program. The position interacts with staff in Forest Districts, other state fire management agencies, and federal fire management agencies and implements program policies and standards in cooperation with these individuals. The position serves as a on the ground point of contact for all CWDG technical assistance, education, and outreach within a Bureau of Forestry region(s).


Specific job duties include but are not limited to:

1. Provide technical assistance to communities to determine CWDG eligibility and education and outreach to promote CWDG and assist eligible communities with preparing applications.

2. Determine which communities are considered at risk for wildfires and updating this information according to national standards and accepted guidelines.

3. Assess communities, structures, municipalities, and counties to determine risk of wildfires, potential corrections, courses of action, etc. Make recommendations to communities and local municipalities regarding actions to mitigate possible impacts of wildfires.

4. Attend meetings and trainings, prepare reports, and respond to audits relating to CWDG activities.

5. Respond to wildfires and other emergencies as a firefighter, single resource, or function in a support position when requested, qualified, and available.

6. Assist the Division of Forest Fire Protection in other program areas as needed.

Employee generally makes decisions on courses of action based on existing policies, guidelines, and standard procedures related to the CWDG program, wildland fire, and the incident command system. Decisions, courses of action, etc. outside of existing guidelines would be reviewed with a supervisor.
