Position Purpose:

Responsible for all phases of environmental education, recreation and interpretive programs and activities at Laurel Caverns State Park.

Plans, develops, coordinates and presents environmental and historical education, recreation programming, and interpretive programs and activities for the public and organized groups ranging from preschool to senior citizen groups. Programs are diverse and tailored to meet the needs of each audience. Examples of program types include guided walks, audio-visual presentations, tours, campfire programs, Penn's Explorers, and field learning activities using, but not limited to, state developed themes focusing on natural history, historic and cultural events, and environmental issues.

Develops and presents impromptu interpretive activities in the park when public usage is high.

Coordinates with park staff, partner organizations, volunteers and other local groups to provide programming and events both on and off site.

Develops and implements special environmental education and interpretive programs which include but are not limited to Cavity-Nesting Trail Program, National Public Lands Day, National Get Outdoors Day, PA Hiking Week, and Earth Day. Work includes writing and disseminating promotional letters and materials to prospective participants and writing and establishing a marketing scheme for the effective implementation of all programs.

Facilitates environmental education learning activities through field learning and classroom experiences using park developed lessons and various curriculums including but not limited to: State Park’s Activities for Environmental Learning, Project Learning Tree, Project Wild, KARE, Pennsylvania Songbirds, Project WET, OBIS, NatureScope and Watershed Education. Programs will occur in the park and as outreach activities.

Provides professional development experiences for teachers using established state and national curriculum.

Provides assistance to educational institutions, civic groups, and public and private organizations in the development and implementation of environmental and historical education and interpretive programs, teacher professional development opportunities, curriculum development and outdoor recreation programming as approved by the park manager.

Works with park manager to assist local conservation groups, schools, scouting organizations and the public concerning environmental learning programs. Write and submits grants with prior approval from the park manager.

Submits proposals for Environmental Education fund and Get Outdoors recreation equipment monies made available through the Outdoor Programming Services Division. Coordinates purchasing and submits tracking information to the regional office.

Schedules programs and prepares lesson plans using the state park approved formats for all programs.

Prepares and submits required reports on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis or as due.

Prepares correspondence, program schedules, reports, articles, news releases and other forms of media releases including social media to disseminate information to schools and the public.

Maintains and inventories the park’s program related equipment, oversees the use of equipment and makes recommendations for repair, servicing, replacement and purchase of new equipment to the Park Manager.

Assists with staff training as needed.

Travels offsite as needed for training and programming. This includes single day'multi-day/overnight offerings.

Assist in the research and development of interpretive and educational exhibits, trails, publications, posters, and other written materials as required.

Maintains natural, historic, cultural and archaeological collections.

Provides assistance to park visitors including answering questions regarding park facilities, resources, recreation, history and environmental features.

Assists with management of the Park’s Facebook page.

Assist with GPS or GIS mapping and resource management. Resource management activities include, but are not limited to, cave and bat research and monitoring, identifying and treating invasive species, participating in prescribed fire, and conducting bio-blitz on grounds as assigned. It is expected that needed certifications to participate in prescribed fire will be maintained as appropriate.

Assists other park personnel as needed in performing their duties.

Must attend the annual OPS workshop, Certified Interpretive Guide Training, CPR/First Aid training, and staff meetings.

Serves as the park’s volunteer program coordinator. Recruits, interviews and schedules volunteers to assist with park events, workdays, trail maintenance, visitor services and programming.

Assists with the coordination of large-scale annual volunteer events.

Along with park manager, attends various partnership meetings such as the Friends of Laurel Caverns. Assists with various partnership and Park related events and provides interpretive, educational or recreational activity during events as appropriate.

Coordinate the park’s intern program in conjunction with the park manager. Recruit interns, assist with intern interviews and work with interns assigned to the park. Assist Park manager in the completion of evaluation and other paperwork required under this program.

Ability to participate in resource management projects throughout the Park.

Assists other Parks in the Laurel Highlands Division as requested. Supports regional programs and events as needed.

Performs additional and related work as required.

Employee is required to complete criminal background checks and the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History.

Employee prepares and presents a variety of environmental, interpretive and recreation programs to various audiences including but not limited to park visitors, school groups and civic organizations, etc. Programs are tailored to match the needs of the audience. Determines needed materials, researches and develops educational materials, publications and exhibits. Schedules and advertises programs.

Employee serves as a team member to coordinate various park events with other park staff, volunteers and partner organizations.
