Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Duties of this position are in the Client Services unit. The incumbent works as part of a team with other laboratory technologists and microbiologists receiving specimens and responding to client inquiries including direct interaction with the public. This position necessarily involves extensive close contact with blood, dead animals, and related specimens. Foul odors and parasites may be present in the environment. The incumbent must be vaccinated against rabies and maintain a current immunization status. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Receives laboratory submissions of all kinds including blood samples, swabs, organs, feces, and whole, dead animals. This includes opening packages, sorting specimens, and ensuring submission forms are legible and complete. Organizes specimens according to tests requested or lab section where testing will be performed while assuring chain of custody is maintained where necessary. Discusses case history with submitters and addresses submission discrepancies throughout the receiving process. Logs submissions and related information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This is the computer system for tracking case history, test requests, results, and documentation related to the custody of submissions, arrival and disposition of inventory, and type and status of work orders. Assigns accession number, case coordinator, and enters data on origin of specimens and tests to be run. Labels and prepares specimens and paperwork for evaluation. Delivers specimens to the appropriate laboratory section performing the tests and notifies lab sections of pending casework. Specimen collection and labeling as required with pathology related duties. Responsible for shipping of specimens to be referred to other laboratories both within and outside of PADLS. Maintains training status for shipping duties and complies with IATA shipping regulations. Responds to client inquiries for results status or general questions regarding specimen delivery and general lab procedures. Logs client feedback using the current form and responds to client feedback issues with measured and appropriate response. Performs laboratory testing of veterinary specimens including specimen collection and preparation for CWD methods as well as parasitological examination including fecal floatation, parasite identification and quantitation. Reports findings in LIMS and generates other test related reports as requested. Responsible for duties related to the laboratory’s quality system including, but not limited to; document control, production of lab log books and other duties as assigned. The quality system includes all aspects of compliance with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians’ Requirements for Laboratory Accreditation. Works to maintain lab facilities and equipment ensuring work areas are clean, organized, sanitary, and in good working order. Follows equipment maintenance plans and records tasks completed in related logs. Contributes to the regular disposal of waste generated in the laboratory. Maintains stock of consumable supplies and working strength disinfectants for the lab areas of the job assignment. Creates agency purchase requests (APR) for supplies as needed. Works in other areas of the laboratory as needed to handle case overload or to cover temporary manpower deficiencies. For example, these assignments may include media or solution preparation, specimen preparation, equipment maintenance, and/or quality assurance duties and documentation as assigned.
