JOB TITLE: PRINT PRODUCTION OPERATOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Print Production job series describes work performed in support of print production services.

DEFINITION: This is work that involves operating power-driven bindery and finishing equipment and assisting with the operation of high-speed, production-level digital and/or lithographic presses in an agency centralized print production facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for independently operating various pieces of power-driven and manual equipment for the purpose of cutting, binding, finishing, and packaging printed materials. Work includes preparing and adjusting equipment prior to and during operation, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and performing minor repairs. Under the direction of a lead worker or supervisor, an employee in this job may assist with operating commercial, high-speed digital and/or lithographic presses to produce commonwealth agency publications and customized documents; reviewing specifications to prepare jobs for printing; modifying files before production utilizing specialized software; configuring and releasing jobs from the print queue; and monitoring jobs for accuracy and quality of finished products. Work also includes entering activities and status updates into a print management system and ensuring work is completed within scheduled deadlines. Assignments are received with general instructions and are carried out within existing guidelines. Work is reviewed by a lead worker or supervisor for overall completion, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Operates machinery, such as paper cutters, paper drills, hole punches, saddle-stitchers, and folders.

• Assists a Print Production Technician in the operation of high-speed, production-level presses producing a variety of forms, letters, manuals, brochures, pamphlets, posters, marketing materials, and other documents.

• Uses manually-operated equipment to perform comb binding, spiral binding, and banding.

• Performs routine maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs to equipment.

• Ensures job tickets/work orders are completed timely and accurately.

• Packs, seals, wraps, and labels materials for delivery.

• Utilizes pallet jacks to load and unload trucks.

• Reviews shipping and receiving documents to ensure accuracy.

• Operates a motor vehicle used to deliver printed publications and materials to various locations.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of office equipment operation.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to operate a personal computer.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year of clerical experience;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
