SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Print Production and Mail Production job series describe work performed in support of print and/or mail production services.
DEFINITION: This is supervisory print and/or mail work in an agency centralized print and/or mail production facility.
An employee in this job is responsible for supervising staff operating commercial, high-speed digital and/or lithographic presses or staff serving as lead workers over employees operating computerized, high-volume mail insertion, sorting, or metering equipment. Work involves planning, prioritizing, assigning, and reviewing work of staff to ensure the production of high-volume, on-demand, and variable data print or mail activities in the most cost-effective manner possible; supervising and performing the set-up and operation of production equipment; diagnosing and resolving equipment operating problems; monitoring quality and timely completion of job tickets/work orders; ensuring staff are following proper safety precautions when operating equipment; and monitoring the inventory of supplies. An employee in this job may also supervise staff operating power-driven bindery and finishing equipment or staff operating computerized, high-volume mail insertion or sorting equipment. Work includes entering activities and status updates into a print management system or submitting daily production reports and ensuring work is completed within scheduled deadlines. Assignments are received with general instructions and are carried out independently. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for overall completion, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):
• Supervises the operation of high-speed, production-level presses to produce a variety of forms, letters, manuals, brochures, pamphlets, posters, marketing materials, and other documents.
• Supervises the operation of high-volume mail insertion and mail sorting equipment and mail addressing and mail/postage metering systems.
• Ensures job tickets/work orders are completed timely and accurately.
• Performs quality assurance/quality control reviews on work completed by subordinate staff.
• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.
• Operates a motor vehicle used to pick up mail and deliver printed publications and materials to various locations.
• Employees in this job may participate in subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of office equipment operation.
• Knowledge of operations and workflow of a print or mail production facility.
• Knowledge of digital and computerized equipment and machinery used in print or mail production.
• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Ability to operate a personal computer.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):
• One year as a Print Production Technician;
or
• One year as a Mail Production Team Leader;
or
• Two years of experience in the operation of print or mail insertion equipment or similar machinery used in a print or mail production facility;
or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
• Certain positions require one year of experience in the skilled operation of lithographic presses.
