DEFINITION: This is professional work in the medical care and treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

An employee in this job serves as a primary care medical practitioner and is responsible for the continuity of health care to assigned individuals with intellectual disabilities. Work involves the responsibility for the continuity of health care and the provision of guidance to interdisciplinary team members in formulating and implementing individual habilitative care and treatment plans. An employee in this job may oversee clinical operations and assign and direct the work of professional and non-professional nursing staff. Work is performed with limited supervision and is reviewed by a clinical or administrative supervisor through consultations, reports, and evaluations of results.

Provides medical care, treatment, guidance, and counseling to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Obtains or reviews individuals’ medical histories, completes medical documentation in accordance with professional standards, and prepares case histories documenting medical care and treatment.

Performs physical examinations, confirms illness and injuries, and prescribes and administers medications and medical treatment.

Orders and interprets diagnostic tests and techniques to aid in diagnosis of illness and injuries.

Confers with individuals, relatives or guardians, consulting physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams on medical care and treatment.

Participates in the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies and procedures in accordance with appropriate accreditation, certification, and regulatory authorities.

Directs staff conferences and team meetings, and participates in continuing education programs as required.

Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of general medicine and surgery.

Knowledge of the principles of medical quality management.

Knowledge of medical jurisprudence.

Knowledge of the principles of risk management and patient safety.

Ability to interpret and use diagnostic tests and techniques.

Ability to analyze and interpret policies, procedures and regulations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

Three years of post-residency experience in the practice of medicine, including oneyear which involved a direct primary care caseload.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

All positions require possession of an active license to practice medicine inPennsylvania issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or PennsylvaniaState Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

All employees must obtain an active registration to prescribe medication from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as a condition of hire.
