CORRECTIONS PLANT MECHANIC

DEFINITION: This is skilled work involving the care, custody and control of inmates in the repair of high pressure boilers and related steam and mechanical equipment in a boiler plant operation which generates stem and/or electric supplies; or receives steam and/or electric supplies from outside vendors at a State Correctional Institution or Facility.

An employee in this class performs and leads inmates in the performance of a wide variety of skilled mechanical tasks in the maintenance and repair of high pressure steam boilers, stationary steam engines and related steam and/or electric and heating equipment. Duties include responsibility and accountability for the care, custody and control of inmates assigned to the employee during a work shift. Work is assigned, monitored and reviewed during and upon completion of assignments for conformance with instructions and safe operations by a technical supervisor or administrative superior.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Performs and leads inmates in the performance of a wide variety of skilled mechanical tasks in the maintenance and repair of high pressure steam boilers, stationary steam engines and related steam and/or electric and heating equipment.

Discusses inmate performance with the supervisor and prepares inmate progress reports.

Maintains inmate attendance records.

Maintains care, custody and control over assigned inmates workers.

Searches inmate work areas for contraband and insures the security of the work area.

Replaces boiler tubes and plates; repairs or replaces grates, gaskets, safety and steam valves; repairs stokers, feed water pumps, water softeners, coal handling equipment and related boiler equipment; and leads inmates in the performance of these duties.

Replaces worn parts of stationary steam engines; adjusts valve timing; replaces bearings, piston rings, slide valve rods and other parts; and leads inmates in the performance of these duties.

Replaces electric generators; and replaces and adjusts brushes; and leads inmates in the performance of these duties.

Does acetylene and arc welding on mechanical equipment as needed; and leads inmates in the performance of these duties.

Operates lathe, drill press, threading machine, power saws and grinding machines; and leads inmates in the performance of these duties.

Performs other related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment, materials, and tools of welding, plumbing, and general mechanical repair work.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam heating or steam electric plant equipment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in the care and use of a variety of hand and bench tools, machines, and equipment used in mechanical repair.

Ability to work from sketches or from oral or written instructions.

Ability to lead inmates in work activities.

Ability to learn the dynamics of individual and group behavior patterns.

Ability to learn and apply search and inspection procedures.

Ability to learn and apply security practices.

Ability to assign, review, and supervise the work of inmate workers.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and inmates.

Ability to maintain order and discipline among inmate workers.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience in performing skilled mechanical repair work involving heavy machines; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from high school;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
