WILDLIFE CONSERVATION OFFICER SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the Commonwealth's wildlife conservation management program.
An employee in this job is responsible for supervising a law enforcement program, conservation education program, or land management program in an assigned region. Work includes the responsibility for coordinating a regional law enforcement program and providing advice to Wildlife Conservation Officers, coordinating and supervising the wildlife habitat development and land management program, or coordinating a conservation education program in an assigned region. Work may include investigating serious game law violations, which require undercover assignments, or coordinating the hunting license issuance program in an assigned region. Supervision is exercised over lower level Wildlife Conservation Officers and other Game Commission employees. Work is assigned in the form of projects or functions by the region supervisor or superintendent of the training school. Work is performed with considerable independence, but is reviewed for adherence to Commission policy, project guidelines and effectiveness of staff utilization.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, coordinates, and supervises the law enforcement program in an assigned region.
Conducts special investigations and undercover law enforcement assignments.
Coordinates and directs conservation information program in a field region.
Plans and supervises projects and programs to improve wildlife habitat.
Coordinates cooperative Commonwealth and Federal wildlife programs.
Supervises and coordinates the program of leasing and mapping of private land for public use and acquisition of public land through land options.
Coordinates and supervise the sale of hunting license and related license issuance functions within a field region.
Advises Wildlife Conservation Officers and conducts interviews in complex or unusual situations or litigations stemming from arrests, appeals, special investigations, fraud, or hunting accidents.
Promotes public relations by preparing exhibits, and developing public relations programs for Wildlife Conservation Officers.
Compiles reports on game populations, game harvests, and game conditions to develop program changes and management plans for present and future needs.
Employees in this job may participate in the performance of their subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organization requirements.
Performs the full range of supervisory duties.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the game law and modern law enforcement procedures.
Knowledge of the practices and objectives of conducting a public relations program.
Knowledge of the hunting license issuance program, including the tabulation and accounting procedures connected with it.
Knowledge of related Federal, state and local cooperative programs.
Knowledge of how assignments relate to total Game Commission objectives.
Knowledge of modern administrative practices and procedures and practices of personnel administration.
Ability to develop, coordinate, and implement a regional program.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare reports and to keep personnel informed of changes and additions to assigned programs.
Ability to understand and carry out assignments with accepted agency policy and guidelines.
Ability to read and interpret applicable sections of labor agreements.
Ability to coordinate and direct the work activities of subordinates.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency and allied Federal, Commonwealth and local officials.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience as a Wildlife Conservation Officer with the Pennsylvania Game Commission;
or
Three years of experience as a Game Land Management Group Supervisor.
