JOB TITLE: SIGN TECHNICIAN 1

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Sign Technician job series describes work in the manufacture and production of signs.

DEFINITION: This is semi-skilled work in the manufacture, production, and distribution of signs and related products.

An employee in this job operates equipment and machinery used to manufacture signs and prepares finished products for delivery. Work is received through approved sign orders or detailed instructions and includes proofreading copy to be placed on signs, arranging layout and application of adhesive letters and graphics to sign blanks, and preparing finished products for shipping and distribution. Instructions are received orally or in writing from a supervisor or lead worker. However, employees are expected to exercise some skill and judgment in the performance of their duties. Work is inspected during production and upon completion for adherence to instructions, specifications, and standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Assists with the set up and operation of automatic or manual silk screening equipment, base coat paint machines, automatic punch and corner machines, hydraulic metal shears, routers, squeeze roll applicators, and drying ovens.

• Assists in the operation, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment used to dry, bake, finish, or otherwise produce signage.

• Lays out and applies letters and graphics on directional signs or sign blanks based on detailed sign orders showing size, location, and copy to be applied.

• Cuts reflective and non-reflective sheeting to proper size and operates plotters to cut letters and graphics from adhesive sheeting.

• Checks completed sign orders, wraps finished signs, and assembles and packs shipments for delivery.

• Utilizes hand tools such as saws, drill presses, drills, sanders, and other related tools to prepare and assemble signs.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the operating methods and materials used in the manufacture of signs.

• Knowledge of safety policies and practices, including those pertaining to safe machine operations.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to interpret sketches, penciled layouts, blueprints, traffic standard spacing charts, specifications, and sign manuals.

• Ability to use a scale to measure inches, fractions, and decimal equivalents.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year of experience in the operation of equipment used in producing or manufacturing signs;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
