JOB TITLE: SIGN TECHNICIAN 2

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Sign Technician job series describes work in the manufacture and production of signs.

DEFINITION: This is skilled or lead work in the design and production of signs and related products.

An employee in this job performs skilled work producing signs using computer operated printers, plotters, laser engravers, and rotary engravers. Work includes discussing sign orders and project ideas with requestors and using graphics or similar software to layout and design projects. Work assignments are received in the form of sign orders, rough layouts, sketches, or verbal instructions. Work may also involve functioning as a lead worker over Sign Technicians 1 by assigning and reviewing work and providing training in the operation of manual or automated silk screening equipment, routers, squeeze roll applicators, and related equipment. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion for adherence to standards and specifications.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

     • Work is differentiated from the Sign Technician 1 job based on the performance of skilled work in the design and fabrication of complex signs and projects requiring the use of graphics software, computer operated printers and plotters, and rotary and laser engravers.

     • Work at this level may involve serving as a lead worker over Sign Technicians 1.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Utilizes software applications to operate computerized equipment such as printers, plotters, routers, and rotary and laser engravers.

• Utilizes graphic design software to layout and design signs and related projects.

• Discusses project ideas with supervisor and requestors and makes recommendations for layout and design of new signs or similar products.

• Functions as a lead worker for Sign Technicians 1 by assigning and reviewing

work, providing training, and performing quality control functions for the unit.

• Sets up, adjusts, and operates automatic silk screening machines, base coat paint machines, automatic punch and corner machines, hydraulic metal shears, routers, squeeze roll applicators, drying ovens, and other sign making equipment.

• Utilizes hand tools such as saws, drill presses, drills, sanders, and other related tools to prepare and assemble signs and other related products.

• Performs preventative maintenance and necessary repairs to sign making equipment.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the production methods, equipment, and materials used in the manufacture of signs.

• Knowledge of safety policies and practices, including those pertaining to safe machine operations.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to interpret sketches, penciled layouts, blueprints, traffic standard spacing charts, specifications, and sign manuals.

• Ability to use a scale to measure inches, fractions, and decimal equivalents.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (NOTE: These are expected of an employee performing the work of this job at the full performance level. These may not be used for merit system evaluation or examination purposes and are not position-specific performance standards.):

• Knowledge of graphic design software applications.

• Knowledge of the principles and standard specifications governing sign use and installation.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year as a Sign Technician 1 (commonwealth title);

or

• Two years of experience in the operation of equipment used in producing or manufacturing signs;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
