JOB TITLE: SIGN TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Sign Technician job series describes work in the manufacture and production of signs.

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the design, production, and distribution of signs and related products.

An employee in this job supervises Sign Technicians in the operation of machinery and equipment used to design and produce signs for agency-wide distribution. Work includes planning production schedules; prioritizing and assigning work; inspecting finished products; and directing employees in all phases of sign production, storage, and shipment. Work assignments are received in the form of sign orders, rough layouts, sketches, blueprints, or general instructions. Work involves evaluating and distributing assignments to the appropriate staff and reviewing work in progress and upon completion for conformance to specifications and requirements. Production activity is reviewed by the Sign Shop Manager to ensure goals and standards are being met.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Supervises the work of subordinate Sign Technicians, including planning the methods and procedures to be used in manufacturing signs.

• Estimates raw materials needed, initiates orders, and supervises the storage and control of inventory.

• Supervises and participates in the preparation of cost records and sets prices for products manufactured and assembled by the sign shop.

• Operates and instructs employees in the proper operation of all machinery and equipment involved in the manufacture and production of signs.

• Supervises the set-up, adjustment, and repair of all machines involved in sign manufacturing.

• Supervises and instructs employees in the methods and techniques of warehousing and shipping of signs and related materials.

• Performs safety checks of all equipment and machinery.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the production methods, equipment, and materials used in the manufacture of signs.

• Knowledge of graphic design software applications.

• Knowledge of the principles and standard specifications governing sign use and installation.

• Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a manufacturing setting.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to interpret sketches, penciled layouts, blueprints, traffic standard spacing charts, and specifications.

• Ability to use a scale to measure inches, fractions, and decimal equivalents.

• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (NOTE: These are expected of an employee performing the work of this job at the full performance level. These may not be used for merit system evaluation or examination purposes and are not position-specific performance standards.):

• Knowledge of inventory management and distribution operations.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year of experience as a Sign Technician 2 (commonwealth title);

or

• Three years of experience in the manufacture of signs which includes one year of technical lead work experience;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of technical lead work experience in the manufacture of signs.
