JOB TITLE: SIGN SHOP MANAGER

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Sign Technician job series describes work in the manufacture and production of signs.

DEFINITION: This is managerial work in planning and directing the activities of an agency sign shop.

An employee in this job directs the manufacture and production of signs and related products for agency-wide distribution and use. Work involves planning and reviewing, through subordinate supervisors, the work of Sign Technicians in manufacturing, storing, and shipping signs and materials used for traffic control or directional or general information for the public. Work is reviewed for conformance to departmental policies, standards, and legal requirements by an administrative supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Directs the manufacture, storage, and distribution of signs and related materials.

• Reviews or develops specifications for various materials used in sign production.

• Reviews, evaluates, and recommends new or revised methods, procedures, materials, equipment, and techniques for the sign shop.

• Interviews and consults with vendors pertaining to shop equipment, materials, design, and sign manufacturing processes.

• Approves requisitions for sign materials and related hardware.

• Reviews for department approval sign proposals from outside vendors.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• Employees in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the production methods, equipment, and materials used in the manufacture of signs.

• Knowledge of the principles and standards governing sign use and installation.

• Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in a manufacturing setting.

• Knowledge of inventory management and distribution operations.

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.

• Knowledge of graphic design software applications.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to interpret sketches, penciled layouts, blueprints, traffic standard spacing charts, and specifications.

• Ability to use a scale to measure inches, fractions, and decimal equivalents.

• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (NOTE: These are expected of an employee performing the work of this job at the full performance level. These may not be used for merit system evaluation or examination purposes and are not position-specific performance standards.):

• Ability to effectively manage, through subordinate supervisors, the planning and production activities of a sign shop.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Two years of experience as a Sign Technician Supervisor (commonwealth title);

or

• Five years of experience in the manufacture of signs which includes two years of supervisory experience;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes two years of supervisory experience in the manufacture of signs.
