CORRECTIONS WOOD FURNITURE FACTORY FOREMAN 1

DEFINITION: This is advanced manufacturing work in the production of wood furniture at a state correctional institution factory.

An employee in this class instructs and trains inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in the manufacture of a variety of wooden furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, chests, clothestrees, cabinets, and therapeutic furniture for handicapped persons. Employee may perform lead work. Work is received in the form of oral or written work orders usually specifying material to be used, assembly techniques, and finish required. Employee exercises independent judgment concerning the technical phases of manufacturing process. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor or administrative superior through personal inspections, conferences, and an analysis of production records.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and instructs inmate workers in the techniques and methods used in the kiln drying lumber and the cutting, fitting, assembly, and finishing work involved in the manufacture of a variety of wooden furniture.

Supervises and instructs inmate workers and participates in the operation, general maintenance, and repair of machinery and tools used in the manufacture of wooden furniture.

Inspects work in progress and finished goods for workmanship, proper construction, and adherence to product standards.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers.

Issues and collects materials and supplies used by inmate workers.

Searches inmates and the work area for contraband and insures security of the work area.

Maintains manufacturing schedules by planning and coordinating the work of inmate workers.

Maintains production, inmate wage and attendance records.

Requisitions materials, supplies, and repair parts from stock.

Processes finished products for shipment to customers or for storage.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the manufacture of wood furniture.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in the wood furniture manufacturing process.

Knowledge of the varieties and qualities of wood and related materials used in the manufacture of wood furniture.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods used in kiln drying lumber.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the manufacture of wood furniture.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to instruct inmate workers in the manufacturing process, and to teach desirable work habits.

Ability to maintain routine records and to write reports.

Ability to supervise inmates and maintain order.

Sufficient physical strength and agility to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience in various machine or production operations used in the manufacture of wood furniture and graduation from high school;

Three years of experience as a Corrections Officer, including one year involving various machine or production operation used in the manufacture of wood furniture;

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    or

Any equivalent combination experience and training.
