CORRECTIONS OPTICAL LAB FACTORY SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION:

This is supervisory work in the operation of a commercial optical lab in a Correctional Industry program at a state correctional institution or facility.

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the work of subordinate foremen and the training of inmate workers in the production and operation of an optical lab. In addition, an employee provides vocational training to inmates for the purpose of skill development and rehabilitation. Duties include establishing production standards and maintaining inventory levels. Work is received in the form of work orders and/or contract orders. Duties include being responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates assigned to the optical lab. Supervision is received from an administrative superior through periodic conferences and an analysis of production reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Plans, coordinates, and supervises the work of subordinate foremen and inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in a commercial optical lab operation which involves all aspects of the manufacture, production and repair of eyeglasses; preparing accurate cost estimates; checking work orders/requisition; controlling usage of and limiting waste of industry supplies and equipment; ensuring timely completion of projects; and inspecting completed work for quality control in accordance with prescribed departmental and institutional standards.

Develops specifications, establishes production standards, and sets priorities.

Makes periodic inspections and analyzes records and reports to insure that the proper quality and quantity of eyeglasses are produced.

Reviews work performance of subordinates and prepares employee evaluation reports.

Supervises subordinate foremen and inmate workers and participates in the general maintenance and repair of all equipment assigned to the optical lab.

Interprets rules, regulations, policies, and objectives of the institution to subordinates.

Confers with foremen on problems of production and recommends changes in production processes to improve the quality and quantity of output.

Approves leave, schedules personnel, and authorizes or assigns overtime.

Requisitions and maintains inventories of raw materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for the efficient performance of the lab operation.

Keeps inventory, production, and time and labor cost records and compiles periodic operating reports.

Receives grievances and complaints, conducts initial investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee, and resolves or recommends resolution to grievance or complaint.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers.

Supervises and participates in searches of inmates and work areas for contraband, and insures the internal security of the shop.

Employees in this class may participate in the performance of their subordinates work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in an optical lab.

Knowledge of the qualities and uses of the materials, supplies and parts used in an optical lab.

Knowledge of the equipment and tools used in an optical lab.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to an optical lab.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise the production operations involved in the production of printing materials.

Ability to keep complex inventory, production, and cost records and to interpret these records to improve operating efficiency.

Ability to supervise and instruct foremen and train inmate workers in the production operation and to teach desirable work habits.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Corrections Optical Lab Factory Foreman;

Four years of experience in optical manufacture or repair work in a commercial or institutional optical lab operation including two years of supervisory experience;

                                                                                                                                                                                                          or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
