CORRECTIONS LAUNDRY PLANT FOREMAN 1

DEFINITION: This is highly skilled and technical work in the operation of a commercial laundry in the Correctional Industries Operation at a state correctional institution.

An employee in this class instructs and trains inmates in the production of full laundry services for work contracted through the Correctional Industries Operation. An important aspect of this work involves providing vocational training to inmates for the purpose of skill development and rehabilitation. Work
involves training and supervising inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in the production of a commercial laundry. Employee exercises independent judgment concerning the technical phases of production. Work is received in the form of contract orders. Employee may perform lead work. Duties include responsibility for the custody and discipline of inmates assigned to the employee during work hours. Supervision is received from a technical or administrative superior through personal inspections, conferences, and an analysis of production records.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and instructs inmate workers in the techniques and methods involved in a commercial laundry, such as washers, dryers, flat ironers, fluffers, folders, etc., as well as shipping and receiving of goods.

Supervises and instructs inmates and participates in the operation and general maintenance of equipment used in all laundry operations.

Inspects work in progress and finished goods for workmanship, and adherence to laundry standards and specifications.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers.

Issues and collects materials and supplies used by inmate
workers.

Searches inmates and work area for contraband and insures security of work area.

Maintains production schedules by planning and coordinating the work of inmates.

Maintains production and inmate wage and attendance records.

Requisitions raw materials, supplies, and repair parts from stock.

Processes finished product for shipment to customers.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in laundry operations.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in the laundry process.

Knowledge of the qualities and uses of the materials and chemicals used in the laundry process.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the laundry operation.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to instruct inmate workers in the laundry process and to teach desirable work habits.

Ability to maintain routine records and to write reports.

Ability to supervise inmates and maintain order.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience in varied laundry machine or production operations in a commercial or institutional laundry and graduation from high school;

Three years of experience as a Corrections Officer, including one year involving varied machine and production operations in a commercial or institutional laundry;

                                                                                                                                  or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
