CORRECTIONS LAUNDRY PLANT SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the operation of a commercial laundry in the Correctional Industries Operation at state correctional institution.

An employee in this class is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the work of subordinate foreman and the vocational training of inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in the production of a commercial laundry. Duties include establishing production standards and maintaining inventory levels. Employee is also responsible for the custody and discipline of inmates assigned to the laundry plant. Work is received in the form of contract orders. Supervision is received from an administrative superior through periodic conferences and an analysis of production reports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, coordinates, and supervises the work of subordinate foremen and inmate workers engaged in the production of a commercial laundry, such as pick up and delivery, payroll, raw material requisitions, maintenance parts, and machine repair.

Develops specifications, establishes production standards, and sets priorities.

Makes periodic inspections and analyzes records and reports to insure the proper quality and quantity of goods are produced.

Supervises subordinate foremen and inmate workers and participates in the general maintenance and repair of machinery such as washers, dryers, flat work ironers, fluffers, folders, etc.

Reviews and evaluates work performance of subordinates; and prepares performance evaluation reports.

Confers with foremen on problems of production and recommends changes in production process to improve the quality and quantity of output.

Interprets rules, regulations, policies, and objectives of the institution to subordinates.

Requisitions and maintains inventories of materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for the efficient performance of the laundry operation.

Approves leave, schedules personnel, authorizes or assigns overtime.

Keeps inventory, production, and time and labor cost records and compiles periodic operation reports.

Receives grievances and complaints, conducts initial investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee, and resolves or recommends resolution to grievance or complaint.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers.

Supervises and participates in searches of inmates and work areas for contraband, and insures the internal security of the shop.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in commercial laundry operations.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in the laundry process.

Knowledge of the qualities and uses of the chemicals used in the laundry process.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the laundry operation.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise the production operations involved in a commercial laundry.

Ability to keep complex inventory, production, and cost records and to interpret these records to improve operating efficiency.

Ability to supervise and instruct foremen and train inmate workers in the production operation and to teach desirable work habits.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years as a Corrections Laundry Plant Foreman 1;

                                                                                                                                      or

Four years of experience in a commercial or institutional laundry operations maintaining and operating equipment, including two years of supervisory experience and graduation from high school;

                                                                                                                                     or
 
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
