JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONS GENERAL INDUSTRIES FACTORY SUPERVISOR

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Corrections General Industries Factory series describes work performed in a Correctional Industries (CI) plant or factory operation.

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work overseeing staff and inmates performing manufacturing or production work in a Correctional Industries plant or factory operation in a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for supervising work performed within a production or services environment. Work involves supervising Corrections General Industries Factory Instructors and other factory staff; overseeing instruction and on-the-job training provided to inmates in production or plant work; reviewing and approving requisitions for supplies and equipment; preparing and maintaining work records and personnel reports; ensuring staff and inmates comply with established industry sanitation and safety standards; maintaining machinery and tools; and enforcing security and custody regulations in all work areas. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed by a Correctional Industries Manager through conferences, reports, and evaluation of overall effectiveness.

• Supervises, coordinates, inspects, and evaluates work performed by staff and by inmates in the production or processing of products or services.

• Trains staff in manufacturing or production methods, materials, practices, and procedures.

• Ensures order and discipline is maintained among inmate workers by enforcing security and custody regulations, resolving minor infractions, and reporting violations to the manager for action.

• Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures the security of work areas.

• Attends supervisory and administrative staff meetings to discuss established goals, working conditions, and personnel matters.

• Maintains adequate inventory levels by requisitioning materials and supplies in advance of need.

• Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure staff and inmates follow established safety and sanitation standards.

• Inspects, tests, cleans, and repairs tools and equipment to ensure they are maintained and operating properly.

• Reviews inmate census data to determine production and staffing needs.

• Supervises the receipt, storage, inventory control, and disbursement of materials and supplies.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• An employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in production planning and control.

• Knowledge of production methods, materials, practices, and procedures.

• Knowledge of the use, maintenance, and general repair of machinery and tools used in a production operation.

• Knowledge of the types, qualities, and uses of materials and supplies used in a production operation.

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in a production operation.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite Software.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to read and interpret written material, including diagrams, manuals, and instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• One year as a Corrections General Industries Factory Foreperson (commonwealth title);

or

• Four years of experience in the production of goods or services, which includes one year of lead work experience;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of lead work experience in the production of goods or services.
