JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONS BARBER INSTRUCTOR

JOB CODE: 98810

DEFINITION: This is specialized work in vocational barber training of inmates at a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for planning, developing, and administering a barber training program; maintaining a barber school and ensuring compliance with all state regulations; and overseeing the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments. Work involves developing curriculum, course outlines, and lesson plans to prepare inmates for state board examinations; closely supervising and instructing inmates during classroom and on-the-job-training; and promoting inmate employability upon reintegration to the community. Work is performed under general direction and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and observation for program effectiveness. Programs are also subject to inspection by the State Board of Barber Examiners and the Division of Correction Education for conformance to state laws and regulations.

• Plans, develops, and implements a barber vocational training program covering course content such as history of barbering, care of equipment, personal and shop hygiene and safety, anatomy, physiology, communicable diseases, shop management, ethics, use of tools and supplies, and related laws and regulations.

• Oversees the provision of barber services to the general inmate population to include scheduling and preparing passes for appointments.

• Prepares lesson plans specifying content and activities to be covered, sequence of instruction, materials needed, and standards for successful completion.

• Prepares and administers training exercises, quizzes, and tests to evaluate inmate performance and preparedness.

• Instructs, demonstrates, and explains the methods, procedures, techniques, and tools used in haircutting and styling, shaving, massaging, shampooing, equipment sterilization, and sanitation.

• Ensures operational standards are maintained in accordance with state laws and departmental and facility rules and regulations.

• Prepares and processes applications and fees for eligible inmates to the State Board of Barber Examiners.

• Requisitions, issues, and collects tools, supplies, materials, and equipment required to complete inmate training and work assignments.

• Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure staff and inmates are in compliance with established safety and sanitation standards.

• Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

• Maintains order and discipline among inmates.

• Prepares, submits, and maintains records for maintenance, repairs, training progress, inventory, wages, and attendance.

• Work may be assigned and performed in areas other than the barber trade in a manner consistent with organizational and operational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the standard principles and practices of the barbering trade.

• Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in barbering.

• Knowledge of the standard methods, principles, and practices of curriculum development, lesson planning, classroom instruction, and student evaluation.

• Knowledge of the hazards and standard safety practices of the barbering trade.

• Ability to use and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies used in the barbering trade.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• All positions require possession of an active Barber Teacher License issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners.
