JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONS LICENSED BARBER MANAGER

JOB CODE: 98812

DEFINITION: This is skilled work managing a barber shop operation at a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing barber shop operations at a state correctional facility while managing the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments. Work involves providing training related to barber shop management, assigning work to inmate barbers, overseeing inmate barbers in the performance of barbering tasks, and ensuring adherence to industry operating standards. Work includes maintaining safe working conditions; ensuring compliance with established sanitation and safety protocols; and enforcing security and custody regulations. Work is performed under general direction and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and observation for program effectiveness. Work is also subject to inspection by the State Board of Barber Examiners and central office program administration for conformance to state laws and regulations.

• Oversees inmate barbers who are providing barber services to the general inmate population to include scheduling and preparing passes for appointments.

• Provides management training related to inventory, supply ordering, and scheduling, through classroom theory, demonstration, and on-the-job training.

• Demonstrates and explains the methods, procedures, techniques, and tools used in haircutting and styling, shaving, massaging, shampooing, sterilization, and sanitation using approved lesson plans and training materials.

• Prepares and processes applications and fees for the State Board of Barber Examiners for eligible inmates.

• Ensures operational standards are maintained in accordance with state laws and departmental and facility rules and regulations.

• Requisitions, issues, and collects tools, supplies, materials, and equipment required to complete inmate training and work assignments.

• Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure staff and inmates are in compliance with established safety and sanitation standards.

• Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

• Maintains order and discipline among inmates.

• Prepares, submits, and maintains records for maintenance, repairs, training progress, inventory, wage, and attendance.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the standard principles and practices of the barbering trade.

• Knowledge of the standard methods and practices of barber shop management.

• Knowledge of the hazards and standard safety practices of the barbering trade.

• Ability to use and maintain tools, equipment, and supplies common to the barbering trade.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Two years of professional experience as a barber.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• All positions require possession of an active Barber Manager License issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners.
